Appendix H: Preparation of Common Reagents

Abstract

This appendix provides concise, step-by-step preparation protocols for all reagents used in the manual that require preparation from scratch rather than direct dissolution of a primary standard. Protocols cover: preparation of approximately 0.1 N NaOH from pellets; preparation and stabilisation of standard N/10 Na2S2O3; preparation of the ammonia/ammonium chloride buffer at pH 10 for EDTA titrations; preparation of 1% freshly prepared starch indicator; preparation of Fehling's Solution A and B; and the chromic acid cleaning solution used for deep-cleaning glass viscometers and R.D. bottles. Each protocol specifies the grade and quantity of chemicals required, the order of mixing, the correct container for storage, the shelf life, and stability precautions.
