Appendix I: Laboratory Safety Guidelines

Abstract

This appendix consolidates the safety requirements that appear individually within each experiment into a single reference document. It covers: minimum mandatory PPE for all work in this manual (lab coat, safety spectacles, appropriate gloves); the COSHH principle and the requirement for a risk assessment before each experiment; correct chemical storage rules (segregation of acids and bases, flammables away from oxidisers, AgNO3 in brown bottles away from light); a hierarchy of waste disposal streams (aqueous, heavy metal, halogenated organic, Cr(VI)); fire safety procedures with extinguisher type selection; and first aid responses to the most likely incidents: skin or eye contact with acids and bases, phenol contact, and inhalation of toxic vapours including formaldehyde, HCl gas, and Cl2. Emergency contact numbers and locations of eyewash station, first aid kit, and fire extinguisher are noted.
